Biographical Info
My name is Rocío Martí, I grew up in a village next to the city of Valencia. My life has always taken place between the village and the city and as I have grown up I have seen how the city has been gaining land from the surrounding crops, extending its limits without integrating it. A peri-urban agricultural land that was born in the Roman Empire and con- tinues to supply the city with fresh vegetables, and which has clearly marked the landscape and structure of the city and its limits. At the age of 18 I started studying architecture, motivated by the fusion of art and engineering that these studies comprise in Spain. However, as time went by, I became interested in the more humanistic side. Because what is architecture without people, or what are cities without people? My personal experiences in the different cities in which I have had the opportunity to live (in chronological order Valencia, Dresden, Salvador de Bahia, Berlin, Granada, Motril and Berlin again) so different in terms of geography, landscape, climate, culture, architecture, urban planning, society... made me start to see the city with other lenses. I became more and more interested in the interrelations between people and the city and its influence on them and decided to start a degree in sociology, which I now combine with my self-employed work. The transversality that I ex- perienced studying architecture has now taken on another dimension. I have been working as an architect since 2013. In 2015 I founded a small architecture studio with my partner, where we have combined small housing renovation projects in rural areas with urban projects. In recent years we. have focus on sustainable urban rehabilitation projects oriented to strength communities and neighborhoods inspired in political, ma- terial and gender aspects. Where social, economic and environmental sustainability are the fundamental axes. In these projects we have had the opportunity to work hand in hand with engineers and sociologists, in multidisciplinary teams. We are currently carrying out several projects in a team made up of architects, urban planners and sociologists in small municipalities with few resources in the region of Valencia. We carry out public consultation diagnoses and help them to apply for European funds for the improvement of their urban spaces and thus develop together with local stake- hodler engagement strategic plans for the rehabilitation of the municipalities. Both at home and at school I received an education of respect for nature that often contradicted what was studied at the school of architecture. I would love to share and export all the knowledge in the future and do my bit to a better built environment in our cities, leaving no one behind and not forgetting the ecosystem of which we are a part. I consider myself an enthusiastic, optimistic, dynamic and proactive person, with a great desire to continue learning and make things better.
