For all our differences, food is one constant that binds every one of us. The way nations and cities handles that food makes a considerable impact on the natural and social worlds we live in, requiring more thought and action if we’re to build resilient food systems that sustain us in the future. The industry is a major contributor to emissions and as the climate changes, so too does our handle on food security. Demand is increasing as we face a decline in cultivatable land, and heavy water use in the production of some foodstuffs lead us to question whether we should be eating them at all. It’s no longer possible for CityChangers to ignore the complex issues around nutrition, international supply chains, packaging, and diet, or the roles that policy, local administrations, and we as individuals must play in creating a more sustainable food ecosystem.
